Do you want to install a fireplace for an additional source of heat in your home? Both wood-burning stoves & gas fires are an excellent heat source but how do you choose between a wood or gas fire? In this article we will explain the top things to consider to help you choose the correct fuel type for you.
The first point to consider when choosing between a wood-burning or gas fire is the type of experience that you would like from your fire.
If you like the authenticity of a real fire then you may be best suited to a wood burner. There is something magnificently unique about a real wood fire and the feeling that it can evoke.
Some of our wood burners can be burned as an open fire which creates the most relaxing and cosy atmosphere. Think chilly Autumn afternoons indoors after a long walk & a Sunday roast, glass of red in hand, relaxing infront of the warmth & crackling of the open fire! You can also cook on a select few using a special barbecue kit.
Alternatively you may just want something to heat your space and provide an authentic flame. This is where convenience comes into consideration. Although wood-burning stoves only take a minute to light and don’t involve as much maintenance as people sometimes assume, they aren’t as convenient as a gas fire, which can be switched on with the touch of a button. You also don’t need to continuously re-load the fire to keep it alight.
What is more important to you? Experience or convenience?
Finally it’s worth considering budget & feasibility when choosing between a wood or gas fire. These two factors go hand in hand.
If you don’t have a conventional, brick chimney then a twin wall flue system is required to install a wood-burning stove or a balanced flue system to install a gas fire. Installing a twin wall flue (and therefore a wood burner) is often more expensive than installing a balanced flue (and therefore a gas fire) so this is worth thinking about if you have a budget.
If you already have an existing, conventional brick chimney then the cost to install a wood or gas fire should be similar, depending on the model of fire you choose.
We hope these points have helped provoke some thoughts leading you to choose between a wood-burning or gas fire.
